Though ultimately a financial failure, the Muntz Jet remains the one
creation most identified with Elgin, Ill., native Earl “Madman” Muntz.

His muntz jet, based on the 1948-49 kurtis
sport, is considered by many to be the first high-performance personal
luxury car.
with an unerring eye for exposure, made sure the Muntz Jets were
visible, choosing bright paint hues and flashy contrasting interiors
under the removable Carson-style padded hardtop.
The 1951-54 Muntz Jet was a favorite of Hollywood celebrities, but was
built in Evanston by Earl "Mad Man" Muntz. Like Muntz, the car was
totally flamboyant.
Unusually, all Muntz Jets are in fact removable hardtop convertibles.
Southern California, the Muntz Jet was built to compete against the
growing sports car market in the early 1950s including the Kaiser
Darin, Nash Healey, and Chevrolet Corvette.
Only about 400 Muntz Jets were ever built, so you're
probably wiping away a tear at the thought that you'll never own one.
